RUTA DE LA PAU (ENGLISH) - PEACE ROUTE

The Terra Alta was the scene of one of the most dramatic episodes of the Spanish Civil War, the Battle of the Ebro. The Peace Route is a tribute to peace and, at the same time, a path for walkers full of places where, sixty Years after that bloody confrontation, silence reigns.

It is a circular itinerary that, using the signage of the GR and the PR of the region, makes a tour of the places that had more relevance during the battle of the Ebro. It begins and ends in Gandesa, passing through Fontcalda , Prat de Comte, Bot, Coll del Moro, Vilalba dels Arcs, La Fatarella and Corbera de Ebro, on a 74-kilometer course that, if completed, can be carried out in twenty hours and twenty-five minutes (without count stops or breaks). This itinerary has a variant that links it to the town of Pinell del Brai.

The route offers several possibilities, since if you do not want to complete it, you can shorten or lengthen by accessing or leaving by other itineraries also indicated as GR or PR.

THE BATTLE OF THE EBRO

The battle of the Ebro was an intense battle of attrition between the republican troops and the Francoist armies started on July 25, 1938, at the end of the Spanish Civil War and which became decisive in the face of the loss of Catalonia to the government republican. The lands of Matarranya, Ribera de Ebre, Baix Ebre and Terra Alta experienced the greatest accumulation of fighting forces in the history of Catalonia and were soaked with the blood of tens of thousands of men.

The offensive of the republican army begins the dawn of July 25, 1938 with the crossing of the Ebro river through three different zones. The areas of Mequinenza, in the north, and Amposta, in the south, were not successful; Only for the central zone was it possible to advance and establish a front of about 35 kilometers, between Fayón and Xerta. General Franco quickly focused the war on this point, where Republicans fought with their backs to the river. In the Sierra de Pàndols and Cavalls the Republicans tried to resist, but the national troops had more and better artillery and aviation and were recovering territory. On November 16, 1938, the last republican troops crossed the Ebro River again and returned to the initial positions.

It was the longest battle of the Spanish Civil War (115 days), of attrition (with a large number of casualties) and, above all, for the Second Republic it meant the loss of a good part of its best army and most of the armament more modern; in fact, after 35 days, on December 23, Franco began the offensive on Catalonia before a disorganized army and a demoralized population. On January 26, Franco's troops entered Barcelona
